For the past two weeks, the children in Magpies have been learning to entertain by writing haikus about a spring garden. Do you know what a haiku is? We became experts at finding haikus and comparing them to different types of poetry. We found that haikus have 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second and 5 in the third. Once we had created mind maps about our spring garden, including nouns, verbs, descriptive phrases and prepositional phrases, we had some fantastic words to use for our haikus. Skillfully, the children wrote lines with the correct amount of syllables that painted beautiful pictures of a garden in spring time. Here is a selection of the children's haikus. Would you be confident finding acute, obtuse and right angles? The children in Magpies are! We've started our new Maths geometry topic by learning about angles. It's given us the opportunity to be creative by finding angles in the capital letters in our name, as well as creating our own geometric pictures. There really are angles everywhere when you start looking! The children were very excited this week to use their string printing blocks. After having been inspired by shapes and patterns in nature, the children chose a design for their printing block. This week, they created repeating patterns with their printing blocks and choice of paint.

The children have finished their persuasive adverts this week to advertise the Community Garden. Magpies really got to grips with using persuasive language, commands and description to entice people to visit the garden. Of course, it helps that we had a wonderful trip there. The children also put in lots of facts about the benefits of growing your own fruit and vegetables.
The Magpies have had a fantastic start to their final term in Year 3. We launched our new theme with a trip to the Community Garden in Priors Park where the children were able to tour the garden and work out which fruit and vegetables were growing, weed plant beds, plant seedlings, and take home their own planted sunflower seed. We're looking forward to some tall sunflowers growing! In English lessons we're developing our skills in writing persuasive text to be able to write an advert for the community garden. We could think of lots of benefits to growing your own fruit and vegetables. The children have started learning about William Morris and his prints based on things found in nature. So far, they have created a collage of examples of his work and his methods. The children will print their very own repeating pattern based on something from nature using a printing block that they make themselves. Watch this space for photos of their work! "We planted runner beans and thyme." Here, they've started to germinate and you can see the first signs of life!
